Works Completed!

April Update - We're back in our newly restored Centre and we're so happy to be here!

The April school holidays have been the perfect time for us to unpack everything, settle back in and get ready to welcome visitors in Term 2!  See you soon.

February Update -  Restoration works are ongoing in February.  They are looking so grand, despite some unforeseen delays. We advise that our return to the Centre will now be postponed to early April 2021. We anticipate access at the end of Term 1, enabling our move back in during schools holidays, ready to open our gates again in Term 2.

Our temporary office remains open at 8 The Terrace, Fremantle (part of the Fremantle Prison) and staff are all contactable as per normal on phone and email.

School incursions continue without disruption. For other events, please note:

  • Perth Festival Literature & Ideas author talks, 15-18 February, will now be held in the East Workshops building inside the Fremantle Prison. Ticketholders will be advised.
  • Young Writers Collective Year 6, Year 7-8 and Year 9-12 workshops, scheduled between 24 February to 26 March, will now be held in the East Workshops building inside the Fremantle Prison. Registered attendees will be advised.
  • School excursion groups for Term 1 can also be accommodated in the East Workshops, within the prison. Our Education Officers are available to assist with bookings and enquiries info@thelitcentre.org,au

December 2020 NoticeMove to temporary home December 2020/January 2021 to enable $500,000 Face Lift to The Literature Centre.

The Centre moved into our home in The Old Fremantle Prison Hospital in August 1993. It had been superbly restored, renovated and equipped and was a fitting home to nurture, promote and celebrate Australian Children’s Literature.

Now, 27 years later, it is to be treated to extensive conservation and structural repairs with $500,000 from the West Australian Government’s State Recovery Funding. We are deeply grateful to the State Government for such a commitment and to the Fremantle Prison team, Paula Nelson, Luke Donegan, Courtenay Heldt and Angelo Mascaro for their detailed planning, dedication and courtesy in undertaking such an important and extensive operation.

As you can imagine, we are thrilled at the prospect but somewhat daunted by having to move, albeit just for December and January, to No. 8 The Terrace. This is the two storey building to the far left of the Fremantle Prison main entrance. While there we will have the same phone and email although there may be a slight disruption from Thursday 3rd to Monday 7th December.  If you need to contact us in this time to make a booking etc. and can’t get through, please text our Office Manager, Kath Wisken, on 0403 507 146 and one of us will be in touch.

We hope to be back in our glorious ‘new’ home from Monday 8th February in time to be all settled in by Monday 15th February. We plan to celebrate by having a grand re-opening sometime in March.

We will be sending out progress reports as we start the complex packing process. We have been here 27 years so there’s rather a lot to think about, pack and move!

Warmest wishes, Lesley
