About

The Literature Centre is a unique organisation dedicated to nurturing young people’s interest in reading and writing through engaging, creative approaches to literature. Founded in 1992 by Lesley Reece AM, the Centre spent its first 32 years at the Old Fremantle Prison and, from 2026, is proudly located on the first floor of the State Library of Western Australia.

Working with thousands of students each year across metropolitan, rural and regional WA, The Literature Centre delivers inspiring programs both on site and in schools. Our Education Officers, alongside accomplished authors and illustrators, facilitate interactive workshops that often draw on original manuscripts, preliminary drawings and artwork. Our offerings include curated picture book exhibitions, student and teacher workshops, author and illustrator visits, young writers programs, professional learning, performances, conferences, festivals, book launches and author talks.
