We're thrilled to advise The Literature Centre has been nominated for the prestigious 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.
Founded in 2002, it is the largest international children's and young adult literature award in the world, with total award money of SEK 5 million (AUD $750,000) administered by the Swedish Arts Council. The award total highlights the view that reading by children and young adults is extremely important. The prize money is also intended to inspire anyone involved in children's and young adult literature.
The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award is presented to a single laureate or to several people or organisations, regardless of language or nationality.
To increase the global aspect, every year a jury chooses institutions and organisations from all over the world invited to nominate candidates for the award. More than a hundred nominating bodies worldwide proposed candidates. For the 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, 237 candidates from 68 countries have been nominated. Our Centre and other worthy candidates were announced by the jury at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 17.
Among the 237 nominees, the list includes 49 new names. The candidates represent all continents and are authors, illustrators, reading promoters and storytellers. 46% are women, 41% men and 13% are organisations.

The Board and staff at The Literature Centre are so excited for the nomination, a first for our organisation. The jury announces the laureate of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award at a press conference after the their final meeting in March 2020. The award is then presented in Stockholm at the end of May/beginning of June 2020.
