Young Writers Collective

Orange Logo

The Young Writers Collective is our 'face-to-face' program (formerly Talented Young Writers Program) that is divided into groups depending students' age, what year students commence the program, and also which location/town they attend.

Our extensive line-up of Australian Authors are scheduled to present workshops in these locations each year:

  • Metro Area - Fremantle
  • Regional Areas - Albany, Bunbury, Busselton and Geraldton

If you aren't able to access our program, you may be interested in Young Writers Online. Find out more HERE

About These Days

Download the promotional flyer for Young Writers Collective HERE

The purpose of Young Writers Collective is to nurture a group of young people over several years by exposing them to superb Australian Authors, but also enabling them to meet and form friendships with other like-minded readers and writers. The students find these one-day workshops informative, practical, intense, inspiring and fun.

Enrolled students commit to one full day in each of the four school terms. Once the year is completed (4 days), participants are invited to return each consecutive year to engage with new Authors and to further develop their skills.  Note: it's not too late to join! Students can still join the program in Term 2, 3 or 4 and only be charged the terms enrolled in!

A typical schedule for the day includes:

  • Author shares his/her background experiences and how they relate to their writing
  • Author presents two or three hands-on creative writing workshops
  • Students engage in silent writing, sharing and editing (small and large groups)
  • All participants finish each day with the start of one or more pieces of writing

The Authors who work with us are carefully chosen for their list of critically acclaimed publications in many genre, a warm and empowering presentation style, different personalities and backgrounds, and a varied approach to the craft of writing.  Each Author is a brilliant teacher of his/her craft. The Literature Centre's Director or Education Officers manage the room each day, working alongside the presenting Author.

Many teachers have registered students in the program over several years and have provided superb feedback, including this from Orietta Stokes, English Teacher and Academic Excellence Program Coordinator at Kalamunda Senior High School:

"We have been working in partnership with The Literature Centre for a number of years now and found the Young Writers Collective program to be highly beneficial to our students. The students are motivated to attend the sessions and find working with published Australian authors to be illuminating and motivating. Students who have attended the program over a number of years perform well in creative writing tasks in English and a couple of graduates from the program who continued from Year 9 through to Year 12 achieved very high results in the Composing section of their WACE English examinations."

Collective Timetables

Term 2 change to Presenting Authors effective 17 May 2021

Bunbury/Busselton 24-28 May - Presenting author now Kirsty Murray (VIC)

Sadly, Archie Fusillo is unable to travel to WA due to circumstances beyond his control. We’ll miss Archie and look forward to his next visit.

Fremantle 24-28 May, Years 7-8 - Presenting author now Kathryn Lefroy (WA)
Due to the above unforeseen circumstances, Kirsty Murray will now be in Bunbury and Busselton instead of Fremantle. Instead, we are delighted to introduce students to Kathryn Lefroy who will be presenting the 5 days. Kathryn's first book Alex and The Alpacas Save the World was shortlisted for the WA Premier's Awards. In addition, Kathryn is an experienced filmmaker and will guide students in the process of scriptwriting leading to a group script and performance.

The 2021 timetables for Young Writers Collective, showing our scheduled authors, dates and locations in WA, are available below.  It has been a challenge to set the program but we're thrilled with the outcome.  Download your copy below and book in now by emailing writers@thelitcentre.org.au
