TALENTED YOUNG WRITERS’ PROGRAMME - Delivered to you Online at Reduced Fees in Term 2, 2020

Now Open to All Schools in Western Australia!

Hello teachers and parents!

Given the unprecedented circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 health crisis, we’ve been planning ways to deliver exciting learning opportunities for students.  For Term 2 (and now Term 3), we’re delighted to announce our unique Talented Young Writers’ Programme (TYWP) will be delivered online for students Years 6 to 12 via a series of video links.  Our authors’ carefully tailored presentations will be pre-recorded in our same programme style.  Students receive the suite of writing sessions from one author, each term, tailored to their year level.

We’ve kept flexible programme delivery in mind so that it that it fits easily into your classroom and/or online situation (and gives parents options at home!). We’re also passing on fee relief to your school and/or families during COVID times so that students can still participate while staying at home or back in the classroom. And, for the first time, this gives us the opportunity to offer this programme to all Western Australian schools no matter where located.  Read on or download our latest flyer HERE

ONLINE PROGRAMME FEES

We have two options available:

Option 1: Students who are already enrolled in TYWP have a reduced fee of $20.00 per student, per term. (previously $30.00 per term) Teachers provide links and information to these individuals, to do at home or in the classroom, or

Option 2: Teachers may choose to register a whole class to participate (with or without former students) for the one low fee for all of $10.00 per student, per term.

Teachers who enrol students can view the online sessions for free prior to use with their students.

PRESENTING AUTHORS

Presenting authors in Term 2 are WA's Deb Fitzpatrick and Meg McKinlay, and Queensland's Isobelle Carmody.  Our award-winning authors have created a range of activities and challenges that focus on student learning, creativeness and their wellbeing at this time.  Your participation ensures an income for our authors in recognition of their efforts.

As you can imagine, we've enjoyed the challenge of filming and editing our first TYWP Online sessions.  We are learning very quickly how to best present this online experience.  Congratulations to all 3 authors, the feedback to date has been wonderful!

PROGRAMME DELIVERY OPTIONS FOR TEACHERS

We will provide 6 x 30 minute sessions/lessons OR 9 x 20 minute sessions/lessons (approximate time). These are sequential.  Each will include the background to, and a reading from, one of the author’s books; a discussion of the writing idea the author is exploring with the students; and an outline of a creative writing task to be done later by the students at the teacher’s discretion following the session. This format may vary slightly between sessions.

We know that breaking up sessions provides flexibility in delivery.  It is your choice!  For example, schedule one session per day, one per week or deliver all together for one big ‘writing day’. Links for all sessions are sent together. They will direct students to the Centre's private Vimeo platform, with access monitored and an expiry date set. These details are provided following registration.

UPDATE! We're excited to advise all sessions with Deb Fitzpatrick, Meg McKinlay and Isobelle Carmody have now been recorded and made accessible via Vimeo for enrolled students. New enrolments still welcome as content will remain available until 7 August.

Details of Talented Young Writers' Programme prior to Term 2, 2020 and the COVID-19 Crisis

Each term, several groups of students come together for a full day workshop with one of Australia’s top Authors for young adults.

The Literature Centre's highly successful Talented Young Writers' Programme (TYWP) has been expanding steadily since 2002, and incorporates these age groups:

  • Young Writers’ Day students (Years 7-8)
  • Youth Literature Day students (Years 9-12)
  • Year 6 Junior Writers' Days (Year 6)

This year the programme will again be presented in these locations across Western Australia: Fremantle, Bunbury, Busselton, Albany and Geraldton.

We gratefully acknowledge funding from the Copyright Agency for assistance with the Talented Young Writers' Programme regional workshops.

Our thanks also go to long-time programme donors, the Rowley Foundation for their regular donations since 2011, supporting the Talented Young Writers' Programme. Our new Scholarship donor, the Hakea Fund as introduced by Fremantle Foundation, are also acknowledged for their valuable contribution 2019-2020.

What to Expect:

The purpose of the TYWP is to nurture a group of young writers over several years by exposing them to superb Authors, but also enabling them to meet and form friendships with other like-minded readers and writers. The students find these one day workshops informative, practical, intense, inspiring and fun.

Enrolled students commit to one full day in each of the four school terms. Once the year is completed (4 days), participants are invited to return each consecutive year to engage with new Authors and to further develop their skills.

A typical schedule for the day includes:

  • Author shares his/her background experiences and how they relate to their writing
  • Author presents two or three hands-on creative writing workshops
  • Students engage in silent writing, sharing and editing (small and large groups)
  • All participants finish each day with a well developed piece of writing

The Authors who work with us are carefully chosen because of their list of critically acclaimed publications in many genre, a warm and empowering presentation style, different personalities and backgrounds, and a varied approach to the craft of writing. Each Author is a brilliant teacher of his/her craft. The Literature Centre's Director or Education Officers manage the room each day, working alongside the presenting Author.

“I kept thinking during that week how passionately I would have loved to be part of such a group when I was young.” Isobelle Carmody - Author and programme presenter

“For me, to have been given the opportunity to share with students where my ideas come from, and how my life experiences have shaped my work, has been the most profound and rewarding of teaching experiences.” Matt Ottley – Author/Illustrator and programme presenter
