Literature Workshops

The Literature Centre aims to make literature more accessible to students from Pre-Primary to Year 12, in an inspiring and nurturing environment. Although many schools visit the Centre, we also conduct residences in schools and libraries throughout WA. These residences are conducted by the Centre's Education Officers or Australian Authors and Illustrators who work with us.

Our workshops are very popular and are detailed below but there are other school incursions or excursions that we can also offer.

Since 2020 with  COVID affecting school excursions and incursions we reduced our fees to encourage and support schools. We hope you can appreciate this has also impacted our sustainability and we now need to start charging realistically again for what it costs us to deliver our programs. Reduced rates are available for low ICSEA schools and please contact us if the below is prohibitive to you.

Workshop Requirements

IMPORTANT! Students should not be shown the exhibition book(s) before participating in a session. However, we encourage teachers to read other books by the same author or illustrator, to the students if you wish. Please ensure all teachers are aware of this.

Each class MUST be accompanied by their class teacher, or another teacher from the school, to fulfil the duty of care requirements. Students must be supervised during the sessions and, of course, the knowledge acquired by the teacher is invaluable.

Many teachers consider these sessions to be Professional Learning and a rare opportunity to observe the individual responses of their students. Detailed teachers' notes, ensuring appropriate follow-up activities, will be provided.

Minimum Fee: Please note, that a minimum fee of $180 applies to all sessions at The Literature Centre.

Invoicing:  If student numbers vary from those booked, it is necessary to advise the Centre prior to your session.  The school will be invoiced by email at the time of confirmation and payment is required within 7 days following the workshop.

A full cancellation fee will be charged if notice given is less than five weeks prior to the visit (excluding school holidays).

Duty of Care: Please note as indicated in Department of Education Excursion procedures and policy that the teacher-in-charge of the class MUST BE PRESENT AT ALL TIMES during the session.

Parent Helpers:  The Centre welcomes parents to all sessions, however, we have found parents with toddlers and/or babies distract students and we ask teachers to take this into account when planning their excursion.

Please note the recommended ratio of supervising teachers/parent helpers:

Kindy - Year 3: 1 adult: 5 students

Year 4 - Year 12: 1 adult: 10 students

Home School: 1 adult educator per family group

General requirements (for Residences): To be communicated to the school at the time of booking (check author/illustrator individual requirements).

Travel to The Literature Centre: Plan your visit to The Literature Centre using public transport! The Fremantle train station is an enjoyable 15 walk from the Centre.  Transperth can provide you with information on transport costs and help you plan your route.  Contact the Transperth Education Team at (08) 9326 3970, email education@transperth.wa.gov.au or visit their website here.
