We loved hosting Teachers for our School Holiday Professional Learning!

Posted 5 months ago by Webmaster

Thanks so much for the fantastic response to our School Holiday Professional Learning.  We loved hosting around 40 teachers here at the Centre, with many from country areas making the trip to Fremantle.  We look forward to announcing our next Professional Learning Workshop soon.

In the meantime, remember our Celebrate Reading National Conference - The Inside Story on Quality Australian Literature for Children is on from 1-2 November at The Literature Centre.  Registrations are open!  We still have a little space left but it will fill fast given the amazing presenter line-up of:  Shaun Tan, Stephen Michael King, Glenda Millard, Lisa Shanahan, Felice Arena, Ronojoy Ghosh, Leila Rudge and Dianne Wolfer.  See all the details HERE!

JULY SCHOOL HOLIDAYS!

Professional Learning - Creative Writing in the Classroom Using Shaun Tan Original Art

Date: Thursday 18 July, 2019

Time: 10.00am - 12.30pm

Gate opens 9.30am for morning tea and browsing in the bookshop.

Rural, remote and metropolitan teachers who are unable to attend PL at our Centre during the term, now is your chance!

If you missed our Term 2 Professional Learning session ‘Art of a Master – Inspiration for Creative Writing’, we are running it again during the school holidays.  Teachers will have the opportunity to explore some of the original, awe-inspiring illustrations from Shaun Tan’s latest book, ‘Tales from the Inner City’. Learn how to engage even the most reluctant writer in creative and critical thinking.  Discover tricks and tips that we have learned from some of Australia’s most talented writers and show how using quality picture books in your classroom will enrich secondary students’ writing.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • The power of questioning and modelled writing
  • The use of thinking scaffolds to develop critical and creative ideas
  • Warm ups
  • Character development and back stories
  • How to include the X factor when plotting a narrative
  • Quick tips for writing killer opening lines and dynamic dialogue

Each participant will leave the session with a collection of practical and inspiring strategies to take straight back into the classroom.

This is a rare opportunity to gain creative writing ideas while immersed in an exhibition of Shaun Tan’s extraordinary original artwork.

What past participants have said they loved about this Professional Learning:

‘the amazing art and stimulus activities related to that’

… ‘the practical strategies for writing explicitly’

… ‘great techniques to make the students get ready for creative thinking and writing’
