From 2012 to 2017, students based in the regional communities of Hedland and Newman had greater access to literature and writing programmes thanks to The Literature Centre’s Principal Partnership with BHP. Over the years, the partnership would grow to not only provide writing workshops with mainstream secondary and Graham Polly Farmer 'Follow the Dream' students, but also include Pilbara Book Weeks with visiting authors/illustrators in primary schools, and a comprehensive programme of Picture Book Workshops using travelling exhibitions of artwork in primary schools.
We are extremely proud of the expertise, inspiration and professional learning delivered in the Pilbara, working with students and teachers in the following schools:
Baler Primary School
Cassia Primary School
Port Hedland Primary School
South Hedland Primary School
St Cecilia’s Catholic Primary School
Newman Primary School
South Newman Primary School
Hedland Senior High School
Newman Senior High School
We look forward to seeing these schools build on their experiences by continuing to seek out quality Australian literature for children and young adults, and inviting Australian authors and illustrators to present in their schools.
Our thanks to everyone who travelled with us and supported us in the Pilbara during this time.
Thank you to BHP for investing in our not-for-profit Centre and validating the importance of our work with young Western Australians. We're proud to share our Letter of Commendation from BHP below, and invite companies in Perth and regional Western Australia who are looking for their next Education and Arts based partnership to contact us on info@thelitcentre.org.au.
