The Viewer tells of a boy whose obsession with interesting artefacts leads him to discover a strange box at a dump site. It proves to be an ancient chest full of optical devices. One is an intricate viewing device which reveals images of significant historical ages, including the present and the future. Shaun Tan's sophisticated and intriguing illustrations in this, his first picture book, will hook your students into this fascinating world of the past and have them questioning their own place in history. Workshops will include a comparison between the first edition (1997) and the substantially changed new edition (2012).
